APR-Labtec’s Rapidfilm® ondansetron submitted for approval by BioAlliance Pharma


The French company BioAlliance Pharma has submitted an EU marketing application for its RapidFilm oral film-strip formulation of ondansetron.

A decentralised application has been made involving 16 countries, for the use of ondansetron RapidFilm for the treatment and prevention of nausea and vomiting induced by chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

The RapidFilm drug delivery technology was developed in a joint venture by APR Applied Pharma Research and Labtec, which are based in Switzerland and Germany respectively. BioAlliance has also licensed an oral ondansetron spray from NovaDel Pharma for marketing in European countries.
Ondansetron (Zofran) is currently available in a number of formulations from the originator, GlaxoSmithKline – as tablets, a lyophilate that dissolves on the tongue (Zofran Melt), a syrup and suppositories. A number of other companies have conducted work on novel formulations of ondansetron.
Earlier this month BioAlliance Pharma reported that its revenues more than doubled in 2008 to reach €8.2 million with €7 million of revenues coming from licensing and collaborations. Cash and cash equivalents totalled €31.7 million on December 31st. Further financial figures will be released later. The company's lead product, Loramyc (miconazole), a muco-adhesive buccal tablet developed using Lauriad technology, had sales of €1 million, 92% of which was generated in France.
